Get Your Provisional Driving Licence

The provisional driving licence is the first step toward a full UK driving licence. You cannot start lessons on a public road without one.

To apply, you must:

  • Be a resident of Great Britain
  • Meet the minimum age requirement (16 for mopeds, 17 for cars)
  • Have eyesight that meets the legal standard
  • Have no medical or legal reason preventing you from driving
  • Be able to pay by credit or debit card (for online applications)
  • Have a valid UK passport or acceptable alternative ID
  • Provide addresses covering the last three years

Apply online at gov.uk or collect Form D1 from any Post Office.

Pass Your Theory Test

You must pass the theory test before you can book a practical driving test. It has two parts — both must be passed in the same sitting. If you pass one and fail the other, you must retake both.

Multiple Choice

  • Duration: 57 minutes
  • Pass mark: 43 out of 50
  • Questions appear on a computer screen
  • Some questions require more than one answer
  • Flag questions to review later
  • Case study questions included (real-life scenarios)

Hazard Perception

  • 14 video clips of everyday road scenes
  • At least one developing hazard per clip
  • One clip contains two developing hazards
  • Pass mark: 44 out of 75
  • Earlier identification = higher score (up to 5 points)
  • Clicking in a pattern scores zero for that clip

A pass certificate is valid for two years. If you do not pass your practical test within two years, you must retake the theory test.

Personal items are not allowed in the test room — lockers are provided.

Pass Your Practical Test

Book your practical test once your driving is at the required standard. Always check with your instructor first — and make sure a suitable car is available before booking.

The test includes:

  • An eyesight check at the start
  • Vehicle safety questions (“show me, tell me”)
  • General driving ability assessed by a DVSA examiner
  • An independent driving section — following road signs or a sat-nav, demonstrating your ability to drive without constant guidance
  • One or more reversing manoeuvres

For more guidance, visit the official DVSA YouTube channel.
